The Severson National Information Center is looking for Alliance members to serve on the National Trend Advisory committee. We need your knowledge and experience to make our trend report (Scanning the Horizons Top 5 Trends) and trend web site meaningful. Volunteer committee members contribute their thoughts, ideas and observations for the subject areas of the web site and the trend report: Scanning the Horizons Top 5 Trends. See the Trend Committee FAQ's for more details on being part of the committee.

The Trend Committee Members for 2008-2009.

You will receive additional information from the Severson Center about how to contribute once you contact us.

NATIONAL TREND ADVISORY COMMITTEE GUIDELINES
(Newly revamped standing committee as of June 2007)

Responsbilities of Members:
Committee members review trends compiled by the Severson National Information Center Librarians annually for identification of the top trends for the trend report. Committee members are also expected to submit at least one impact/comment per quarter (4 times per year) in a specific subject area, for posting to the trend web site. The subject area can be of your choosing, and the impact or comment can be in response to new trends identified on the web site, established trends, issues or concerns, or emerging trends that you are seeing, etc. Quarterly reminder emails will be sent to you about reviewing the trends and sending your input to us.

Guidelines for Review of Trends:

Identify gaps in topic areas: Suggest new areas of concern and provide sources to find current statistics in these areas (please be specific and do not suggest anything unless you are certain the information is available from the source). We only look at current information in most cases, i.e. since December of the previous year.

Statistics: Do the statistics support the trend/issue/concern or do they cause confusion? Is the trend statement worded correctly? How should it be worded?

Developing Impacts: Ask yourself what impacts can be foreseen (or perhaps what has already been seen) that will affect your organization, programs, public policy, staff, funding, clients, community, the field, etc. because of these trends. These impacts do not have to be supported by statistics or research-they may be your opinions or observations.

Definitions:

Trend Statement: A summary sentence of a trend/issue/concern that is supported by the information excerpt below it. The supporting information is usually from a report, article, conference, radio show, interview or other media source and is fully referenced. Trend statements are organized under trend subject areas.

Impact Statement: How a trend/issue/concern will affect Alliance for Children and Families agencies and the nonprofit human service field. They are drawn from member feedback, interviews with national experts or from original source materials; not always supported directly with statistics or research, they include expert opinions.

Trend Subjects: These are the areas in which we look for trends. The top level trend subjects are: Business/Economy, Demographics/Population, Education, Health, Nonprofits, Social Service Issues, Technology/Science and Work. They may change depending on what's affecting the nonprofit human service field.
